Why CleanPalm?
Palm oil is a highly versatile ingredient used widely in food, cosmetics, toiletries, personal care and cleaning products. It can be both liquid and semi-solid at room temperature, it is resistant to oxidation, it has a high melting point and it is odourless and colourless, which means it can be used to add a variety of textures and shelf life to products without altering their look or smell.
As a result, palm oil is a much sought-after ingredient by chefs and product formulation developers and is present in over 50% of all products on supermarket shelves.
However, palm oil’s popularity comes at a huge environmental cost – it is one of the largest drivers of global commodity-driven deforestation, which in turn contributes significantly to the large impact our food systems make on our environment.
CleanPalm delivers the same sensory experience and product functionality as palm oil without contributing towards deforestation or the destruction of wildlife and biodiversity. It is made using our natural, non-GMO fermentation process to replicate the properties that make palm oil so uniquely useful,in a fully traceable, sustainable and environmentally friendly way.
How it’s made
CleanPalm is made using fermentation, the ancient food and beverage process that has been used for centuries to make well known foods such as beer, miso and kombucha.
We use fermentation to grow our proprietary natural yeast (which contains oils, proteins and other nutritious ingredients) using surplus food that would otherwise go to waste in a sustainable and circular process. We then separate the ingredients for use in food and cosmetic products.
